4th Annual Miamibloco Saideira Social
Miamibloco’s massive Samba percussion ensemble returns to the Bandshell
with iconoclastic, genre-bending collaborations, showcasing Brazil, Cuba,
and Miami’s eclectic music scene. Memorial Day Weekend Saturday 5/25/24
Miamibloco will host its 4th year of the Saideira Social on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday 5/25 at the Miami Beach Bandshell .
The show is a curated pulsating journey led by Bateria Saideira, Miamibloco’s massive 57 community-made percussion ensemble. In this energetic show, the Bateria uses Samba instruments to rhythmically explore dynamic confluence and heritage of African, Brazilian, and the Global Afro Diasporic cultures that give Miami its authentic global sound, this year spotlight: Cuba 🇨🇺, with spectacular surprise guests on Piano, percussion and Yoruba vocals.
Miamibloco’s intergenerational performance ensemble seamlessly blends top local and touring musicians with people of all walks of life to perform with accomplished musicians on stage.
Through the upcoming Saideira Social, Miamibloco uncovers yet a new layer of Miami’s musical excellence through iconoclastic, genre-bending collaborations featuring music projects from players of Bateria Saideira spanning from classic rock, to experimental jazz. These unpublished collaborations serve to highlight the rich local music scene, along with the diversity and uniqueness that community-made ensembles like Miamibloco’s Bateria Saideira add to Miami’s diasporic cultural legacy.
The 4th Saideira Social will feature a full night of original arrangements on Brazilian percussion and horns, and new music with local projects and Internationally acclaimed musicians including: A surprise guest Cuban pianist, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Munir Hossn, Latin Grammy-nominated duo Rose Max & Ramatis (Samba), Anemoia (experimental jazz), The Lab (rock), Jason Matthews (synthesizer) playing original compositions or arrangements for this specific show once per year.
The annual Saideira Social is the culmination of months of weekly Bateria Saideira public rehearsals, where locals, tourists, percussion aficionados, and dancers gather to get their batucada fix and peek behind the scenes of the making of the show.

Founders’ Background
Brian Potts, is a doctor in percussion performance from The University of Miami. As an educator, he brings the formal understanding of western music education and seamlessly integrates theory with the learned oral traditions and pedagogy of African and Afro Brazilian percussion he has been studying and practicing in Brazil and abroad for the last 14 years. Brian is part of All star Brazilian percussion group PRDmais, along with 5 of the most celebrated percussionists in the Brazilian music scene. Brian is the lead instructor, musical director and mestre de Bateria of Miamibloco.
suOm Francis is a dynamic urban planner and visual artist with a background in philanthropy. Drawing from her diverse interests, she weaves percussion into the very fabric of Miami's streets. Through strategic planning and collaborative efforts with local governments and private donors, suOm amplifies access to percussion programs and orchestrates community events. Her role focuses on bringing to life the vision of inclusivity and belonging through percussion experiences, where city pride, collective joy, and genuine human connection are the basis of a resilient and healthy Miami. suOm is the director of operations, and leads Miamibloco’s visual identity and social media.
MIAMIBLOCO Background:
Established in 2017, Miamibloco’s mission is to empower Miami's diverse communities through accessible, intergenerational percussion education and performance, fostering connections and belonging across socio-economic backgrounds. We aim to champion joy as a birthright and mutual trust, as essential pillars for community resilience. With inclusive programming, we unite people of all ages and cultures, creating spaces for musical learning and self-expression. Through percussion ensemble workshops, rehearsals, and performances through out the year, we cultivate intercultural exchange and build bonds that celebrate each individual as a vital community asset, and in Miamibloco's collective sound.
The organization’s programs always provide professional samba instruments and instruction. These are: Bateria Saideira performance ensemble, Bateria Academy courses, Community workshops for all levels in Miami’s public spaces, MiamiblocoKIDS. In addition, since Fall 2023 Miamibloco has expanded its cultural offerings to include a monthly traditional Rio de Janeiro- style Roda de Samba “Pagode de Mesa” focused on cultural exchange, and an afro-samba quintet: Samambaia.
